H.U.B. City Steps History

The H.U.B. City Steps project stems from a previously piloted health promotion initiative in the Delta known as Fit for Life Steps. This six-month physical activity and nutrition intervention focused on improving physical activity and health through walking teams led by supportive, lay-volunteer leaders, pedometer diary self-monitoring and monthly educational sessions.

Building upon their work with the Delta Nutrition Intervention Research Initiative, the Nutrition Department collaborated with the City of Hattiesburg to seek funding to establish a program similar to Fit for Life Steps. The city’s “Get Healthy Hattiesburg” initiative served as a catalyst to apply for funding and to design the project now known as H.U.B. City Steps.

The abbreviated spelling of H.U.B. City Steps is a play on the program motto "A Healthy 'U' Begins with Steps".

Mission Statement

H.U.B City Steps is a community-based walking initiative that encourages and motivates Hattiesburg residents toward a healthier lifestyle.
